Book Series

Spears Books, an independent publisher of African/Africana books and member of the African Books Collective (ABC) is delighted to launch its book series on Gender in Africa. With dozens of titles in print and electronic formats, Spears Books has distinguished itself as an innovative and dynamic publisher that takes pride in the rigour of its editorial process, the aesthetics of its designs and the global reach and affordability of its titles. In this regard, Spears Books aims to become a leading platform for scholarship in African and diaspora history as well as gender studies in Africa.

Spears Studies on Gender in Africa

The series advisory board is made up of distinguished scholars in Africa. We’re particularly interested in a variety of titles that range from single monographs to edited volumes insofar as they engage with issues of gender in Africa and the diaspora. Area specializations that may be considered by the board include but are not limited to gender studies, feminisms, masculinities, queer studies, identities and sexualities. The board is especially interested in nuanced analysis and accounts of people’s gendered identities and subjectivities including but not limited to sport, customs and traditions, religion, literature, language, media, film, art, science, and women’s histories.

To submit a proposal for the book series, include the following core items; a) a concise description of the book, outlining your rationale, approach, main themes, objectives and any unique features; b) an abstract of about 200-300 words; c) a table of contents and d) a sample chapter, preferably, the introduction. Should you prefer to be more detailed, a proposal form is available for completion.

Until the lion tells its side of the tale, the story of the hunt shall always be glorified by the hunter. African histories matter and we want to ensure every valid account is heard in the furthest ends of the earth.
